Some forms of heart valve defects like mitral valve prolapse seems to stem from some hereditary condition defects . Mitral valve prolapse is the more common form of heart valve defects. It is also called heart click-murmur or floppy heart syndrome. In mitral valve prolapse, the flaps forming the valves are enlarged such that they protrude back into the upper heart chamber or the atrium. The valve may not close properly and cause a backflow of blood upstream. It propduces a characteristic sound of a click and then a murmur.

The more commonly known heart disease which run in families is congenital heart disease. It is believed that around 5% of congenital heart problems are caused by genetic abnormalities. There are also a few types of hypercholesterolemia or very high levels of blood cholesterol, that run in families. In very severe case, even children can develop coronary heart disease and die from heart attacks.
